Staying Hydrated: A Simple Habit That Supports Healthy Aging

With much of the country experiencing dangerously hot summer temperatures, staying hydrated is especially important for older adults. Heat can increase the amount of fluid your body loses through sweating, and older adults may not feel thirsty as often as they once did. That means dehydration can develop before you realize your body needs more fluids.

Proper hydration supports nearly every function of the body. Drinking enough fluids helps regulate body temperature, supports healthy digestion, protects joints, improves concentration, and helps your heart and kidneys function efficiently.

Even mild dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, constipation, confusion, and an increased risk of falls. Hot weather, certain medications, physical activity, and illness can increase your need for fluids.

Don’t Wait Until You’re Thirsty

A good habit is to drink fluids consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Water is an excellent choice, but milk, herbal tea, and water-rich foods such as watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, and strawberries can also contribute to your daily fluid intake.

If plain water isn’t appealing, add slices of lemon, lime, cucumber, or berries for a little flavor.

A simple routine can also help: drink a glass of water when you wake up, with meals, and when you take medications, unless your healthcare provider has advised you to limit fluids or follow a different schedule.

If you have a medical condition that requires you to monitor your fluid intake, follow your healthcare provider’s recommendations.

Make Hydration Part of Your Routine

During periods of extreme heat, don’t wait for thirst to remind you to drink. Keep fluids readily available, take breaks from the heat, and pay attention to how you’re feeling.

Staying hydrated is a simple, inexpensive habit that can help you stay comfortable, alert, and active—especially during hot weather.

Healthy Aging Tip:

Keep a reusable water bottle nearby throughout the day. Seeing it is a simple reminder to take regular sips and make hydration part of your daily routine.
